If someone were to ask you why safety is important, how would you respond? You may “know” that it’s important to keep safety in mind as you go about your daily activities, but how would you explain the reasons why this is the case.
We all work to earn money to provide for our families and there is no single thing that is more important to our employee’s families than our employees themselves. Every one of us at the Ted Berry Company has a responsibility to our families, our coworkers, and our company to always “do it right†and to work and act safely. Our safety program has many facets including a safety committee; which is essential to continuously improving our entire safety program and is a mix of operational employees, supervisors, managers, and company ownership. Without this collaborative effort and a total commitment from every single employee at our company we will not have done our best.
In a recent safety meeting with company employees I asked “How many of you wore your seatbelt on the way to work this morning?†A little more than half the hands in the room went up. However when I asked “How many of you make sure your kids are wearing their seatbelts every time they are in the car?†Every hand in the room went up without hesitation.
Why do we not look at our own safety the same as we would for the people that we care about? They care about us and need us home at the end of each day.
There are advantages to running the business in a safe manner, no matter which way you look at it. To do otherwise would simply be irresponsible. So, why safety is important to you? If you have an answer write it down, fold it up, put it in your pocket, and pull it out next time you need it.
Work safe – FOR ALL OF US!
